Conflict resolution is a way for two or more parties to find a peaceful, agreeable solution to a disagreement among them. The disagreement may be personal, professional, financial, political, or emotional. When a dispute arises, often the best course of action is communication, mediation and negotiation to resolve the disagreement.

In the building industry, a conflict of interest means that a person or party has concerns that do not coincide with an overall goal. Generally, a conflict of interest occurs on a construction project because owners and contractors have inherently different goals.

Conflicts on a building site are a common occurrence. Disputes and disagreements are going to arise when you have multiple parties such as general contractors, owners, architects, subcontractors working together to complete a project. These stakeholders have different opinions and interpretations on how things are supposed to be done. Those differing opinions often lead to conflicts.

Remember, the goal of any construction project is to see successful completion of the job on time and within budget. When conflicts arise, it can seriously threaten achieving that goal. Resolving conflicts can be challenging. It all comes down to making the best business decision to keep the project moving forward.

By the end of this course, you will have the knowledge and tools you need to effectively resolve conflicts on the construction site or within the workplace.  Resolving conflicts will always lead to a better understanding or a new way of doing things that can improve the overall project.
