As buildings become more tightly controlled environments, indoor air quality (IAQ) and its effects on our health become an increasingly critical issue. Today, there are more than 80,000 synthetic chemicals in use, most of which have not been tested individually or in combination for their effects on human health. Also, the materials used in building, furnishing, and maintaining a building potentially can contain toxins that will effect air quality.

In this course, we will take a look at the issue, materials, and contaminants that can cause poor indoor air quality. We will look at the was to counter act these issues and create a good indoor air quality through ventilation and air cleaners.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and explain the different types of contaminants that are the cause of poor indoor air quality
  • Identify the components that will assist in achieving good indoor air quality
  • Identify and differentiate the types of ventilation systems used in indoor environments
  • Summarize the importance of fenestration
