A non-compliant exit path is one of the fastest ways to stall a plan review — and one of the most expensive things to fix after framing is up. This course gives BC home builders the practical grounding needed to design residential means-of-egress paths that clear Code on the first pass: correct widths, clear heights, and door requirements, plus the exempt exits and non-qualifying options that trip up otherwise solid layouts. You'll also learn how egress interacts with stair, guard, and fire-protection provisions, so your designs hold together as a system rather than a collection of individually-compliant parts.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Define what qualifies as a means of egress and distinguish compliant exits from exempt or non-qualifying features
- Apply minimum Code widths to the egress path components under the builder's control in residential layouts
- Apply minimum clear height requirements to exits and access to exits, including where exceptions apply and where obstructions create non-compliance
- Review the egress path as a connected system, accounting for stair and guard requirements and relevant fire-protection considerations
