On a small urban lot, there’s very little room between the site and the street. When erosion and sediment controls go in late, runoff from short tasks is underestimated, or inspections slip, sediment leaves fast. It ends up on sidewalks, in catch basins, and in complaints from neighbours and the municipality. That means rework, delays, and a harder time meeting permit conditions.

This course takes builders and site supervisors through practical erosion and sediment control for BC residential infill projects, stage by stage from preconstruction to final stabilization. It covers how sediment moves on tight urban sites and how to choose and sequence controls such as stabilized access, perimeter and inlet protection, stockpile management, and basic dewatering. It also covers rainy season planning, inspection and maintenance routines, documentation, and coordinating trades so controls stay intact.

The payoff is a cleaner site, fewer failures to fix after a storm, and smoother municipal inspections. Because requirements vary by municipality, the course also reinforces checking local bylaws and permit conditions on every project.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply practical erosion and sediment control measures to keep sediment on site on small urban residential projects in British Columbia.
  • Select and sequence appropriate controls by construction stage, including stabilized access, perimeter protection, inlet protection, stockpile management, and basic dewatering.
  • Inspect, maintain, and adjust site controls through changing weather and site conditions, including rainy season preparation.
  • Document actions, coordinate with trades, and correct common failures to support cleaner sites and smoother municipal inspections.
