Electrical issues turn into delays, failed inspections, rework, and safety concerns when builders aren’t clear on how a residential system fits together, what protection requirements mean on site, or when to bring in the electrician or engineer. Most of these problems start as coordination mistakes and red flags nobody caught early.

This course takes BC home builders through the basic layout and terminology of a typical residential electrical system, from utility service to panel to branch circuits and end devices. It covers service size and panel basics, GFCI and AFCI protection, grounding and bonding, builder versus licensed electrical contractor responsibilities, and coordination points for rough-in, finishing, inspections, and deficiency prevention. Real examples include kitchens, bathrooms, exterior areas, suites, EV charging readiness, and heat pump electrical considerations.

You’ll walk a site review speaking the same language as your electrician and catch problems before the inspector does. Throughout, the course keeps a clear line on your role: regulated electrical work belongs to qualified licensed trades.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the main components and flow of a typical residential electrical system in British Columbia.
  • Use correct electrical terminology during planning, site reviews, and coordination with licensed electricians.
  • Recognize common deficiencies, red flags, and coordination points that can lead to inspection issues or rework.
  • Distinguish builder responsibilities from the work that must be performed by qualified licensed electrical trades.
